This is a combined image that shows a button and textile as it came out of the ground last November at the Brothers of Charity site, on the inside of the building and where the Old Town Trail now runs. It’s been conserved and is now in three pieces, as shown on the right side of the main image. Top to bottom: - Copper-alloy domed button (would have been shiny brass when new, some don't know how the metals would have looked originally); - Textile fragment showing a weave pattern (we'd have to do some sort of spectroscopy to find out original colour if preserved); - Another textile fragment with repaired button hole (the button had been in the hole before conservation treatment). Going through the artifact collection today, we looked at comparable weave patterns in the reference textiles and determined this to be a twill 2-2 (herringbone pattern) weave, and the conservators indicate that this is probably raw silk. The site context dates it to c.1713-1745 but the artifact assemblage for the soil layer in which this is found seems to be associated with the c.1730s-40s time period, and French. So to sum it up, it’s part of a silk twill men's garment, such as from a coat or waistcoat, French, c. 1730s-40s. This is what we have been able to determine from this object so far, drawing information from the field, collection, and the conservation lab. Further study of the artifact assemblage and the site features will tighten up the timeline and setting. Not bad for a little button and shred of cloth!
