They hatched and are hopping. Spring reintroduction of 24,000 northern leopard frog eggs hatched successfully, tadpoles thrived and we are pleased to find several 'froglets,' which we hope will overwinter successfully and breed two springs from now. Wild ones were last seen in the park in 1980.

The Waterton Lake wildfire is now 85% contained and is still 'being held'. Six crews and one helicopter continue to action the fire. Today's weather forecast calls for another hot, dry and windy day. Although it is quite smoky today, the smoke is not from the Waterton Lake wildfire. Yesterday, fires all across the Pacific Northwest grew due to dry, windy conditions; the smoke is likely to impact us for at least the next day or two.

Thanks to the 40 volunteers and experts Mira Vanhala, Kim Pearson and Jaimee Dupont who joined Parks Canada and the Nature Conservancy of Canada for this annual Butterfly Count. All enjoyed a beautiful, sunny morning catching, identifying and releasing butterflies in the park before moving to the Nature Conservancy of Canada’s Palmer Ranch east of the park in the afternoon. The data collected will be submitted to e-butterfly and is a valuable resource in determining species distribution. http://ow.ly/Q0QTo
