Banff National Park of Canada"If we view a great mountain soaring into the sky, it may excite us, evoke an uplifted feeling within us.... The artist takes that response and its feelings and shapes it on canvas with paint so that when finished it contains the experience." (Lawren Harris, Canadian painter, 1885-1970) Lawren Harris, a member of the Canadian Group of Seven, was harshly criticised for embracing abstraction to capture the "experience" of Canada. His work was regarded as rebellious and shocking. Last week, this Lawren Harris work painted in 1930 sold for 4.6 million CDN. You can see for yourself if he did it justice. This work was inspired by the Tonquin Valley in neighbouring Jasper National Park. http://ow.ly/V9zcM

Waterton Lakes National ParkSeveral bat houses have been erected around the operations area here in Waterton Lakes National Park, capable of providing roosting habitat for several thousand bats. The bat homes were built ahead of a planned demolition of staff housing. These buildings were determined to be maternity roost colonies for the Little Brown Myotis, an endangered species in Canada. Waterton, home to at least 8 of Canada's 19 bat species, started a park-wide bat monitoring project in 2015 with over a dozen acoustic monitoring stations. #BatWeek
