    Citizenship and Immigration CanadaThe first black newspaperwoman in North America - Mary Ann Shadd Cary (1823-1893) In 1851, Mary Ann Shadd Cary immigrated to Canada where, for a time, she continued her teaching career. In 1853, she established the Provincial Freeman, a newspaper devoted to "informing and organizing" Canada's black community. Mary Ann Shadd Cary was the only woman commissioned as a recruiting officer during the American Civil War. At age 60, she began a law career, having been Howard University's first woman law student.
